About the Event
Political philosophy contends with the problem of forming a system that appropriately balances the supremacy of the individual, of the society, and of nature. The struggle for primacy between all three has been tried and tested over millennia.
Western values of individualism and collectivism have all proven themselves to be successful to a limited degree but are now displaying deep fissures from both social and civilizational standpoints. With the emergence of the East in the form of India and China – both long standing civilisations, maybe the answer for harmony lies with them.
Could the Indian idea of Dharma as “that which sustains” be a tenable guide in forming a more sustainable political theory and ultimately society? Or are Western values too distinct, too deep rooted for Dharma to show us a way out of the fly bottle?
Join us and explore how Dharma could help Western society to rethink and reimagine the relationship between the individual, the society and nature.
