The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the use of advanced surveillance technologies around the world.According to a 2019 report, 176 countries across the world are using AI for surveillance purposes, with the leading vendors being China and the US. Governments now have the power to predict the actions of their citizens and are increasing the scope of their surveillance.
Given that governments are expected to maintain the safety of their citizenry, can governments be trusted to use AI surveillance technologies for good? Can we expect to trust governments to respect civil liberties given the power they hold? And, do governments have responsibilities regarding the sale of AI surveillance tech to other countries?
